Late 19th century
Silver. Embossed, engraved.
This Torah shield successfully combines traditional destination and functional decoration of Torah scroll. The central element of this item's decoration is the Tablets of the Law with Ten Commandments. Below is a rectangular box with four plates bearing the feast names: the Sabbath, the Pesah, Rosh Hashanah, the Yom Kippur.
Below the box is a medallion supported by lions. To the left and to the right the columns are spaced to symbolize the columns at the entry in the legendary Jerusalem Temple. The composition is topped by an embossed crown. Two embossed birds as if taking off the Tablets are also of great significance.
