The goal of the project is to provide Internet users the ability to get acquainted with the unique collection of Jewish silver ritual objects from the Ukrainian museum of historical jewellery.
The collection counts more than 400 items, created from XVIII century till the twenties of the XX century.
The heart of the collection is formed with objects seized by the Soviet Committee on requisitioning of ritual valuables during 1920th - 1930th and objects requisitioned by Kiev custom house and passed to the museum in the 70th and 80th of the last century.
Before the twenties of the XX century these unique works of art were used during the ceremonies in synagogues.
They were presented both on happy or on sad occasions to the Jewish communities of Kiev, Zhytomir, Vinnitsa, Belopolie, Elisavetgrad, Lohvitsa, Meldzhibozh, Tul`chin, Odessa, Kherson, Yampol`, Volochisk and other cities and towns of Ukraine.
We would like to repeat the words spoken by Jack Rosen, the president of The American Jewish Congress, on the opening of the exhibition “Treasures of the Torah”: “ … we opened the door for all, who wish to see the beauty”.
Photographs of the exhibits were kindly provided by the Deputy Director of the National Museum of History of Ukraine Ivan G. Yavtushenko (d.2015).
